Toyota Smart Charging

Available with your Toyota HomeCharge, Smart Charging is an intelligent way to charge your Toyota electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid at home. Whenever you plug in, Toyota Smart Charging automatically schedules the best time to charge your vehicle, based on your energy tariff, and battery level. British Gas customers receive an extra 25% Smart Charging credit on their electricity bill.

What does Toyota Smart Charging do?

It shifts charging away from peak demand periods where possible. This can help to support grid stability.

Smart Charging works in the background. Once set up, you don't need to manage every charging session. Just plug in when you get home and let Smart Charging take care of topping up your car.

If you’re a British Gas electricity customer, you can choose to link your account and receive an additional 25% Smart Charging credit, shown directly on your electricity bill and linked to your flexible charging.

Why Smart Charging Matters

If you drive an electric car or plug‑in hybrid, charging your vehicle will make up a significant part of your household energy use. Smart charging helps you manage this in a better way by making charging:

  • Simpler – it automatically schedules charging for you, so you don’t have to think about it
  • More efficient – it prioritises cheaper times to charge, helping you reduce energy costs
  • More responsible – it charges when the electricity grid can best support it, helping to balance demand

All of this happens in the background, without changing how or when you drive.

How does Smart Charging work?

Based on the information you provide, Smart Charging automatically creates a tailored charging plan that prioritises cheaper, lower demand periods, while always ensuring your vehicle is ready when you need it.

Smart Charging is managed entirely through the MyToyota app, where you can:

  • Activate or deactivate Smart Charging
  • View your charging status
  • Adjust your preferences
  • Override the session to charge with immediate power needed

Smart Charging works best when you plug in regularly and charge in smaller amounts. This allows the system to optimise charging more often, unlocking greater benefits over time, without affecting your daily routine.

How can Smart Charging help me save on energy costs?

Charging your electric or plug‑in hybrid at home can be one of the most convenient and cost‑effective ways to drive electric.

Compared to public charging, home charging is usually cheaper and lets you make better use of your household electricity supply.

For many drivers, this is why home charging quickly becomes their main way to charge.

Charging an electric vehicle does change how much electricity your home uses. On average:

  • A typical UK household uses around 2,700 kWh of electricity per year
  • Charging an electric car at home can add around 2,500–3,000 kWh a year (based on driving 10,000 miles a year at 4 miles/kWh when home charging)

With this increase in electricity use, when you charge becomes just as important as how much you charge. Smart Charging helps you take control by charging your vehicle at the most cost‑effective times automatically.

Choosing the best electricity tariff

Many UK energy suppliers now offer time‑of‑use tariffs, where electricity prices change during the day and reward flexibility with lower prices at certain times.

If you’re charging your car regularly at home, it is worth reviewing your existing electricity tariff, and considering whether a flexible tariff suits your lifestyle.

Smart Charging is an intelligent feature that helps you charge your vehicle in the most cost-effective way.

After you share your home energy tariff, the time you need your vehicle ready, and your desired battery level, Smart Charging creates a personalised charging schedule. It automatically charges your vehicle at the best times to help lower your energy costs, while still ensuring it's ready when you need it.

Once you've entered your home energy tariff, the time you need your vehicle ready, and your desired battery level, Smart Charging takes care of the rest. It creates a personalised charging schedule that aims to minimise your charging costs while ensuring your vehicle is charged to your preferred level on time.

When you plug in, Smart Charging begins with a short 15-minute charging session to assess the available charging speed and power. After this, it prioritises charging during your off-peak tariff window to reduce costs, and intelligently manages any remaining charge outside of that window to ensure your vehicle is ready when you need it.

Smart Charging helps you ensure you reach your preferred battery charge level, and intelligently prioritises your off-peak charging schedule. You don’t need to remember when to plug in or unplug your vehicle, simply let us know when you will need it, plug it in, and we’ll take care of the rest.

This allows you to ensure you always have enough battery, without relying only on a shorter off-peak window.

To set up Smart Charging, you will need a Toyota electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), your own Toyota HomeCharge wallbox. The MyToyota app is also essential for setting up and managing this feature.

Yes, you can override Smart Charging at any time via the MyToyota App. This allows your vehicle to begin charging immediately, bypassing any existing schedules or restrictions.

Once you unplug the vehicle, Smart Charging will automatically reactivate, and your next charge will be optimised as usual. If you’d prefer to pause Smart Charging for more than one session, you can also disable it directly within the app.

Please note: Charging outside of your optimised schedule, especially during peak tariff times, may result in higher charging costs.

Smart Charging can provide bring small, considered rewards each month from trusted reward partners.
Rewards can be offered to all who complete Smart Charging sessions, no matter who the home energy supplier is.

Toyota Smart Charging is designed to work with most standard energy tariffs, regardless of energy supplier.

British Gas customers can link their account to Toyota Smart Charging in the MyToyota app and eligible smart charging sessions will get a 25% discount on their tariff’s unit rate.

This credit will appear directly on the British Gas electricity bill.
