What You'll Need

Before we can get started, we'll need to know your property has the basics needed for an installation. Not every property is suitable for an EV charger, and some older properties might need a bit of extra electrical work before installation can begin. If you need help, don’t worry – experts from British Gas will be able to advise you free of charge.

  • Off-street parking

To have your own charge point installed, you must have a private off-street parking space, such as a driveway or garage.

  • Freeholder permission

Live in a block of flats or a rented property? You’ll need permission from the freeholder before we can install your charge point.

  • Electrical safety check

If your property was built before 2008, we’ll arrange a free video call with a British Gas engineer to make sure your electrics are up to standard.

The Process

Getting a charge point installed is easy with British Gas and Toyota. You will have expert support at every stage, the process can take up to 6 months, so we recommend ordering your EV charger through your local Toyota dealer at the same time as ordering your new vehicle.
Find your dealer
  • Step 1

    Place your order

Once you place your order, British Gas will get in touch to ask some simple questions about your home.

  • Step 2

    Home check

Next, we might need to arrange a ‘home check’. This is a 30 minute free video call or home visit with a British Gas engineer to check a few things around your home, finalise your charge point install design, and answer any questions you might have.

  • Step 3

    Charge point approval

You might need approval from your local Distribution Network Operator to connect your charger to the local grid. If you do need this approval, British Gas will take care of the whole application process for you and the DNO will follow up with you directly if they need more information.

  • Step 4

    Installation

The installation is carried out by a British Gas engineer. It usually takes 2-4 hours and we’ll need you to be at the property for that time. After that, you’ll be ready to start charging your EV at home straight away.
