Safety Firsts

Toyota Safety Sense is a set of active safety technologies, created to keep you and other road users safer than ever before

It's easy to take car safety for granted nowadays. Features such as seat belts, airbags and safety glass all come as standard on modern cars. But while they protect you if you’re involved in an accident, wouldn’t it better if you could reduce the likelihood of the accident happening in the first place?

Toyota Safety Sense is an innovative pack of active safety technologies that mitigates the likelihood of collisions. Adding to previous safety features such as parking aids, it comprises Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist, to create a safer driving environment for you and other road users. Using a small camera and a laser sensor mounted on the inside of the windscreen, Toyota Safety Sense helps you make better decisions, making you a better, safer driver – and could save you money with a lower insurance premium as a result.

Automatic High Beam (AHB)
Using the Toyota Safety Sense camera, AHB makes you a safer night-time driver. It detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles, the rear lights of cars in front of you, and streetlights when you’re in a built-up area, switching automatically between low and high beam. As well as letting you concentrate on other aspects of driving, it also makes you a more considerate driver.

Pre-Collision System (PCS)
PCS scans the road ahead for vehicles and recognises when there’s a possibility of a rear-end collision. If you’re not reacting in time to prevent it, the Pre-Collision System kicks in to stop or limit the severity of an impact. At first you’ll get audible and visual warning alerts. If you start to brake, PCS adds extra force to mitigate the extent of the accident. If you don’t, it will brake for you.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
Sideswipe collisions are more common than you might think and can be dangerous and expensive. The Toyota Safety Sense camera can recognise line markings on the road ahead and judge if you’re unintentionally drifting into an adjacent lane. If you are leaving your lane without signalling, one of the lane markers flashes orange and an audible beep will get your attention.

Road Sign Assist (RSA)
The Toyota Safety Sense camera can also detect road signs such as speed limits and ‘do not overtake’ signs. If you enter a 30mph zone but don’t slow down, you’ll get an acoustic warning and a visual warning on the cockpit display.
