RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Code name: Team Rickshaw.
The team of engineers at Toyota, code-named Team Rickshaw, implemented genchi genbutsu; this translates to “going to the source to get the facts.” They watched taxi companies, welfare facilities, and experts across Japan. They conducted field surveys on taxi usage in major cities at tourist attractions, disaster-affected spots, and hospitals. They even rode alongside taxi drivers to feel their experiences firsthand, all in an effort to develop a better taxi.
A universal design for a wide range of people.
ACCESSIBILITY
A universal design.
JPN Taxi was designed with accessibility for a wide range of passengers in mind. It features a stowable wheelchair ramp as well as plenty of passenger space inside. This type of accessible design is crucial to a future of expanded and advanced mobility. And it will be on display for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
