Up close and personal with the new Avensis

The new Avensis has evolved into a great-value, elegant and refined flagship model. A more striking design and a new interior combine with new engine choices and cutting-edge safety features. And it’s built in Britain. We take a look at some of the details.

Here at Toyota, we believe that if you stand still you’re actually going backwards. That’s why we continuously pursue our Always a Better Way ethos and we always look to the future, to make things better.

The new Toyota Avensis is the very latest expression of that philosophy, because it’s a car designed and built with the future needs of both business and private customers fully in mind. Its looks have real desirability; it has new powertrains designed to cut running costs; it offers more luxury equipment and now has a new set of active safety technologies, Toyota Safety Sense.

From the moment you first see the new Avensis, you’ll notice the elegant styling that makes it so sought-after. From the front, it has the boldest expression yet of Toyota’s new design language, with swooping LED daytime running lights that blend into a chrome strip along the bonnet’s edge.

Below that, the large lower grille gives the car real presence. From the side, the proportions have a balance that keeps the car visually rooted to the ground. The new Touring Sports estate version has a sleek, cohesive silhouette, too. At the rear, the lights have a similar signature to those at the front, emphasising the car’s purposeful stance.

Take the new Avensis for a drive and you’ll feel how hard engineers have worked finessing every aspect of the driving experience. The steering has been honed to deliver consistent feedback, while the suspension offers a blend of excellent ride comfort and handling stability.

Toyota also believed there was a better way to enhance quality. To that end, they worked out exactly where road and wind noise enters the cabin, and improved those areas accordingly to make the Avensis’ interior quieter and more refined.

As well as being quieter, that interior is also a spacious, comfortable place to be – the new materials, backlighting and colours have been carefully chosen and prepared to give owners a premium experience not matched by other mainstream brands, and so underline the great value of the new Avensis.

To highlight this improvement, the Avensis has been given a new grade specification and line-up that emphasises both the luxury throughout the interior and that incredible value for money. The grades start with Active, and climb through Business Edition, Business Edition Plus, and finish with Excel.

The Active grade comes with Bluetooth, air-conditioning, cruise control, power front windows and a self-dimming rearview mirror, as well as the Toyota Pre-Collision System.

The Business Edition grade and above gets the full Toyota Safety Sense pack of active safety technologies that includes the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist, which reads road signs to let you know the speed limit on the road. In addition, it has climate control, automatic lights and wipers, DAB radio, full audio connectivity, a reversing camera, and Toyota’s Touch 2 with Go touchscreen navigation system.

Move up to Business Edition Plus and the new Avensis features highlights such as a keyless entry and go system, leather-and-Alcantara seats, privacy glass and automatic headlamp levelling to help when you have a full luggage compartment.

The range-topping Excel grade comes with electrically adjustable and heated leather memory seats, 10 speakers and adaptive front lighting – headlights that swivel as you turn corners to improve the view ahead.

Touring Sports buyers who opt for the Excel trim get the additional benefit of Toyota’s Skyview panoramic roof, which offers an incredible upwards view to keep passengers enthralled on any journey.

There’s a new selection of diesel and petrol engines available in the new Avensis, too. The diesel-engine range consists of two new engines, a 1.6-litre and a 2-litre, both of which comply with the strictest Euro 6 emissions regulations. The new 1.6-litre diesel, available for the first time in the Avensis is designed to be both punchy and frugal, so it develops power up to 112PS, but can cover 67.3 miles on every gallon of diesel. Its low CO2 output of just 108g/km will appeal to business customers, too.

Meanwhile, the 2-litre diesel engine produces an impressive 143PS, which gives a 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds and plenty of power and torque from low rpms to aid overtaking. Add in the fact that it has a combined economy figure of 62.8mpg and emits just 119g/km of CO2, and it’s clear that the Avensis offers great value for high-mileage business users. Both diesels now have extended maintenance intervals of 12,000 miles, helping to lower annual running costs.

Petrol fans are catered for, too, with the existing range of engines being enhanced to provide smoother, more efficient power and much-improved economy.

Not only is innovation evident throughout the technology available with the new Avensis, it also influences the way it’s built.

As with the previous model, Toyota’s plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, will build the new Avensis, using Toyota’s ‘just in time’ manufacturing system, in which cars are built to order, helping the unrivalled value for money, quality, durability and reliability of the new Avensis, backed up by Toyota’s five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

The new Avensis has been designed and engineered with style, luxury and innovation at its heart. Experience the car for yourself now at your local dealer.
