Toyota Safety Sense is a set of newly developed active safety technologies, created to keep you and other road users safer than ever before

Basic safety features such as seat belts and airbags come as standard on modern cars. But we’re taking safety to another level. Toyota Safety Sense – comprising Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist – uses a small camera and a laser sensor on the inside of the windscreen to create a safer driving environment.

Pre-Collision System

This system assists the driver when they are not braking and there’s an imminent risk of a rear-end collision.

“You’re in slow-moving traffic on the motorway when a driver changes lanes and pulls in front of you. But they misjudge the distance between themselves and the car in front and begin to brake hard to a stop.”

“If the system doesn’t sense any driver input on the brakes, it activates the Autonomous Emergency Braking function.”

“Your car brakes and stops by itself. Toyota Safety Sense avoids a collision. I’ve tested this. And it works!”

Lane Departure Alert

This feature recognises lane markers on the road and where your Toyota sits within them. If your car appears to leave the lane when indicators are not being used, a beep and visual warning will alert the driver.

“Driving at motorway speeds, even slightly moving from your lane could leave you with nasty side-swipe damage or cause a serious accident.”

“Lane Departure Alert helps mitigate this type of accident.”

“If you drift out of your lane on the motorway and are not indicating, Lane Departure Alert gives you an audible and visual warning to alert you. The corresponding lane marker on the dashboard display screen flashes orange.”

Automatic High Beam

This is able to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles, the tail lights of vehicles ahead or street lights. It automatically switches your high-beam headlights on and off so you don’t blind oncoming drivers and as a courtesy in street-lit built-up areas.

“We’ve all been driving on main roads at night, when you need to keep switching your high beams on and off as cars come towards you.”

“Automatic High Beam uses the Toyota Safety Sense camera to detect other headlights, tail lights and street lights.”

“Then it switches your high beams on and off automatically, letting you keep focused on your driving.”

Road Sign Assist

The fourth technology included with Toyota Safety Sense uses the camera to recognise speed-limit and overtaking signs, reminding you of the speed limit on the dashboard display screen.

“You’ve been driving along a road with a 60mph speed limit for the best part of an hour when the limit changes to 30mph.”

“You don’t notice the sign, but Road Sign Assist does.”

“It flashes the speed limit on the dashboard display as well as giving you an audible warning. That’s Toyota Safety Sense in action.”
