"It's a right-first-time fix"

Award-winning damage assessor, Paul Lousteau, explains the importance of an accurate estimate

In some respects, perhaps it’s better not to meet Paul Lousteau. As a vehicle damage assessor (VDA) at Westover Toyota in Bournemouth, his job is to come up with an accurate assessment of what’s required to repair your damaged Toyota back to its pre-accident condition (and NCAP rating) and getting the work approved by your insurance company. But Paul is very good at his job. In fact, earlier this year, Paul won a British Bodyshop Award in recognition of his estimating excellence.

“I was one of five finalists from across the country who made it through to an assessment day at Toyota’s training academy in Nottingham [now in Burnaston],” says Paul. “To get to that stage, we provided the most detailed information and the most accurate appraisal based on photos of damaged cars.”

The second appraisal included a customer experience role-play scenario, a written exam, damage assessment, and an interview with an insurance engineer. It was tough, but Paul came out on top.

So, how does his expertise help the customer? “Most of our time is spent dealing with insurance companies,” says Paul, who has achieved an assessor standard accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). “The more accurate the repair estimate, the quicker the job will be authorised, it’s a right-first-time fix, and the customer has their car back promptly.

“We are also approved by Toyota Insurance,” says Paul. “They know we are accurate and use genuine parts fitted by trained technicians. With that assurance, Toyota Insurance allows us to self-authorise repairs. Some insurers can take several days to approve a repair. With Toyota Insurance, we can make an estimate one day, and start repairs the next. It’s much quicker.”
