Benefit in Kind (BiK)

The Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax charge applies to any employee who receives a company car, or any other benefit, which is for private use as part of their salary package.

Low CO2 emissions are crucial to reducing BiK tax liability. View Toyota's hybrid range here for very low CO2 emissions.

More information

BiK taxation is one of the methods used by government to achieve its CO2 emissions reduction objectives. It uses a number of attributes to determine how much BiK tax someone should pay. How much BiK tax is payable on a car is determined its P11D value, its CO2 emissions, the type of fuel it uses and also the employee’s personal tax rate.

With regard to a company van that is also available for private use, the BiK calculation is much easier. In this case, HMRC simply allocates the amount of £3,150 as taxable benefit, including an additional £594 if free fuel is also provided for private use. These figures are then multiplied by the highest rate at which the driver pays income tax to calculate their annual Benefit-in-Kind Tax liability.

The P11D form outlines the cash equivalent value of all the benefits and expenses that have been supplied to employees during the tax year and has to be completed by employers.

One of the main benefits that must be included is any Company Car that is also available for private use, including travel to and from a permanent place of work. This is important whether you’re a Fleet Manager or a Company Car Driver.

More information

P11D is used to determine Class 1A National Insurance Contributions for Fleet Managers. This is the amount that your company has to pay on the employee benefit provided and an important element of the Whole Life Cost calculation for a car.

For Company Car Drivers, P11D is used to determine the Benefit-in-Kind Tax liability of a vehicle.

The P11D value of a car is extremely important in determining the costs of operating a Company Car, that’s why Toyota have created a range of fleet cars with low P11D values to minimise the expense associated with running a Company Car or fleet.
