The bus and train operator FirstGroup are preparing to import 100 Americanstyle yellow school buses as part of an attempt to change the way the British think of the school run. The company says that 28 local authorities from Bristol to Aberdeen have expressed interest in the US icons and they firmly believe the yellow school bus, a symbol of safety in America, will catch on here. In Britain, fewer than 10% of primary school children take a bus to school. In the US the figure is 54%. FirstGroups Chief Executive estimates that if the buses catch on in a big way, up to 20% of UK rush hour traffic congestion could be eradicated. We do not have long to wait to find out, as the first imports, manufactured to comply with the latest European noise and fuel emissions standards, are to arrive in time for next years Spring term.
