The all new Yaris met the highest standards for the 2011 test programme and its results were good enough to comply with the higher five-star threshold that will be introduced in 2012. The fundamental strength of the car's structure is at the heart of Yaris's ability to provide a safe environment for all occupants – adults and children. New Yaris further benefits from a comprehensive package of active safety systems, including ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Corner Stability Control, Brake Assist, Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control.
Vehicle stability control helps prevent skidding on sharp bends or slippery roads by automatically applying the brakes to individual wheels as needed, while moderating engine output.
Brake Assist provides support in emergency braking if you can’t brake hard enough. It does this by measuring how fast the brake pedal is depressed and increasing the force if necessary.
Traction control steps in if the tyres lose grip during hard acceleration, electronically adjusting the power coming from the engine until control is restored.
ABS with EBD helps you to stay in control in an emergency. ABS prevents the wheels from locking, and EBD makes sure that braking pressure is even to all four wheels, so avoiding skids.
There are seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag. The twin-chamber driver and front-passenger inflatable airbags have sensors to ensure that, if you're sitting close to the wheel, the bag inflates with less force. There are also side airbags for the front seats and curtain-shield airbags covering both the front- and rear-seat passengers.
Whiplash injury lessening seats are designed to reduce the chance of injuries to your neck and shoulders in the event of a rear-end shunt.
Special anchor points in the back allow you fit ISOFIX-equipped child seats (available from your Toyota Centre).

Toyota's well-regarded three-cylinder one-litre unit, delivering a useful 69hp. It's also very frugal, returning 58.9mpg on the combined cycle and emitting just 111g/km of CO2. It comes with a crisp five-speed manual gearbox and is available on the T2 and TR grades.
The most powerful engine in the range is the 1.33-litre four-cylinder that makes 99hp, but also sips fuel at the rate of 52.3mpg while keeping emissions down to 123g/km of CO2*. Available on the TR, SR, Trend and T Spirit models, it has a six-speed gearbox.
This automatic version of the 1.33-litre engine smoothly changes gears for you, but unlike conventional autos it's actually more economical than the manual, officially returning 55.4mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 118g/km of CO2*. Available on the TR, SR, Trend and T Spirit models.

The most economical engine in an already frugal range, the diesel manages an impressive 72.4mpg on the combined cycle, but is also a powerful performer thanks to 90hp on tap. Emissions are the lowest of the four as well, with a CO2 figure of just 104g/km.
